Chelsea Clinton doesn’t seem to be thrilled that the East Wing of the White House is being demolished for a new ballroom ― and that’s apparently got Donald Trump Jr. in a snit.
The $250 million ballroom is being financed by private donations, but the National Trust for Historic Preservation says the 90,000-square-foot event space would “overwhelm the White House itself.”
In an op-ed published Thursday in USA Today, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate HIllary Clinton, said that while President Donald Trump “has the right ... to pave over the Rose Garden (and denude it of roses) as well as turn the East Wing into a ballroom,” she noted that “a disregard for history is a defining trait” of his second administration.
She warned: “This is what happens when we take a wrecking ball to our heritage.”
Clinton promoted the article on X with two posts.
Donald Trump Jr. hit back by taking shots at Clinton’s parents with a post on X.
“Lol, your parents tried stealing furniture and silverware from the White House… and let’s not talk about the intern. Sit this one out,” Trump posted in response, with a reference to various Clinton scandals, including Bill Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky, and their return of $28,000 worth of household goods back to Washington, D.C., in 2001.
Chelsea Clinton had yet to respond to Don Jr.’s post as of Friday afternoon. HuffPost reached out for comment, but no one immediately responded.
However, others online did not hold back when calling out the president’s firstborn son’s comments.
It should be noted that the Clintons and the Trumps have had a mixed relationship over the years.
Bill and Hillary Clinton attended Donald Trump’s 2005 wedding to Melania, and Chelsea Clinton was reportedly friends with Ivanka Trump for years before their parents ran against each other.
Back in 2018, Don Jr. even thanked Chelsea for defending his younger brother, Barron, from a Twitter troll.
They’ve also had their bouts of snark, like last year when Don Jr. had this comment on a social media post claiming Chelsea was hoping to get an ambassadorship if Kamala Harris won the election: “Shocked.”
Chelsea responded, writing, “Must be the same people who said I would run for Congress, get married years before I actually did, and have an alien sibling.”
