Epic Troll Defends Edward Scissorhands In Segment On Edward Snowden

A HLN segment about National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden went off the rails Wednesday when the show's guest started defending fictional horror character Edward Scissorhands. It just goes to show how few credentials you need to be a talking head on TV.

HLN called up Jon Hendren, who goes by @fart on Twitter, to talk about Snowden, who recently joined Twitter. For the first few minutes, the conversation was straightforward. Anchor Yasmin Vossoughian asked why Snowden, who now lives in exile in Russia, hasn’t been kicked off Twitter like members of the Islamic State have. 

“He’s been isolated for so long,” Hendren said. “We should listen to what he says.”

But after cutting to a clip of John Oliver talking about the possible harm Snowden’s release of NSA documents could have caused, it becomes clear Hendren is not referring to the whistleblower.

“There is classified information out there that John Oliver was referring to, that was released, that could have feasibly harmed people,” Vossoughian said.

“Well, you know, to say that he couldn’t harm somebody with what he did -- like, he could, absolutely, he could have,” Hendren said. “But I think to cast him out, to make him invalid in society simply because he has scissors for hands? I mean, that’s just strange. People didn’t get scared until he started sculpting shrubs into dinosaur shapes and whatnot.”

Either Vossoughian wasn’t listening or she tried to play it cool. She continued, asking Hendren whether it’s hypocritical for Snowden to have asylum in Russia.

“Casting him out is just completely wrong. We’re treating him like an animal, like somebody who should be quarantined and put away. Just because he was created on top of a mountain by Vincent Price, and incomplete, with scissors for hands and no heart,” he said. “Edward Scissorhands is a complete hero to me.”

“But what about the choice he made to live in a country like Russia?” she asked.

“I mean, where else is he going to go? You know?” Hendren said. “We cast him out. We got scared when he poked a hole in a waterbed with his scissor finger, that was just unreasonable of us.”

“Well, Jon, I appreciate you giving us your opinion,” Vossoughian concluded.
