Emmy Ratings Drop, Take Second Place Behind Sunday Night Football

The Emmy Ratings Are In!

The Emmys put on quite a show on Sunday night, but they were no match for Sunday Night Football.

Viewership for the 63rd Emmy Awards on Fox came in second behind the Atlanta Falcons vs. Philadelphia Eagles game on NBC. The awards show drew an average of 12.4 million viewers -- down 8% from last year's numbers -- according to Nielsen. Those numbers surpassed the record-low of 12.3 million viewers in 2008 (when the Emmys were on ABC) by just a bit.

But the awards did show slight gains in the 18-49 demographic, and it performed better with viewers ages 18-34 than it has in the past four years.

The ratings performance was no surprise given that
this marks the fourth consecutive year that the ceremony has faced off with football and lost. Some observers even suggested the gains were even impressive. This year's total ratings dip could also be explained by the fact that the Emmys didn't have to compete with football last year because they aired on NBC.
