Gilt's Infiniti Offer Lets You Buy Shoes, Earrings...And A Car

Today On Gilt You Can Buy Shoes, Earrings...And A Car

Monday's selection of sales on Gilt Groupe includes something a little out of the ordinary among the usual assortment of dresses, accessories, jewelry, and home decor: a car.

The luxury-goods flash-sale website has partnered with carmaker Infiniti to offer up one, and only one, Infiniti JX crossover at half price. The car will go on sale at noon E.T. on March 12 for $27,425 (the car's retail price is $54,850).

Gilt said in a press release that it will donate the retail value of the car to Coaches vs. Cancer, a partnership between the American Cancer Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches to promote cancer awareness.

This isn't the first time Gilt has offered up a set of wheels: In 2010, Gilt Groupe put three Volkswagen Jettas up for sale at $5,995, around $10,000 less than their retail price.

Daily deals service Groupon has also experimented with expanding from manicure deals and restaurant discounts to higher-ticket items, such as car leases and college tuition. However, Groupon's car deal was a "belly flop," according to Crain's Detroit Business, which notes, "Only three consumers agreed to pay $200 to get a $500 discount voucher at LaFontaine Buick-GMC-Cadillac in Highland Township. Groupon and LaFontaine had set 10 as the minimum required for the vouchers to be issued."

Along with the Infiniti JX, Gilt will also be kicking off a "March Madness" sale that includes tickets to the tournaments and hotel packages.
