A 65-year-old northwest suburban man was hospitalized Tuesday after landing what police called an "experimental aircraft" in the midst of having a heart attack.
Steven R. Nusbaum had been flying the aircraft near his Hebron, Ill. home just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when his son Chance noticed him land abruptly in a farm field in the 7000 block of Miller Road, the Northwest Herald reports. When Chance arrived at the plane, his father was lying back in his seat after apparently emergency landing the craft.
Police and fire officials responded to the scene and Nusbaum was resuscitated after he received CPR in addition to two shocks via an automated external defibrillator, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the pilot was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in critical condition. As of Wednesday morning, his condition had reportedly stabilized.
The FAA has been notified of the incident.
