Man Who Allegedly Threw Ax At Daytona Beach Teens Still At Large: Police

Police Hunt For Suspect In Ax Attack

Police in Daytona Beach, Fla., are searching for a man who allegedly threw an ax through the window of a Jeep Cherokee June 14.

Three teenage boys who were in the SUV said the man got out of his car at an intersection, accused the teens of using a racial slur and threatened them before throwing the 2-foot-long roofing ax through the rear window of the victim's vehicle.

"If they did say something to him, that didn't give him the right to do what he did, because he could have killed someone with that ax," Daytona Beach Police Department spokesman Jimmie Flynt told NBC affiliate WESH.

According to a police incident report, the suspect came up to the car yelling obscenities and told the victims, "I just did 15 years in prison... [Do] you want a pistol in your mouth?"

When the driver began to drive away, the suspect returned to his car, retrieved the roofing axe, and threw it through the window. The teens pulled into a subdivision and called 911.

"There's glass in my hair," one victim told the operator in a recording obtained by WESH. "I'm bleeding. I can't see any critical injuries, I'm just really shooken [sic]."

Two teens in the car suffered minor cuts from flying glass, according to WNDB. The Orlando Sentinel reports the victims were "still shaking in fear when police arrived," but the suspect had fled.

According to WESH, police checked traffic cameras in the vicinity of the incident but came up empty-handed.

The suspect remained at large Monday. According to WNDB, he is "described as a black man in his 30′s or 40′s, standing 6 foot to 6’5 tall and weighing around 250 to 300 pounds. The victims state he was wearing a green uniform of some kind with a baseball cap and black boots."

The Huffington Post contacted the Daytona Beach Police Department for comment Tuesday morning, but requests were not returned as of press time.
