PUERTO RICO - Mayagüez, la 'Ciudad de las Aguas Puras, tendrá próximamente un representante en el boxeo de paga en la figura del boxeador Ricardo 'Richy' Rodríguez, quien estará debutando en una cartelera que ha de presentar la empresa 'Cotto Promotions' el sábado 1 de noviembre. En entrevista concedida a este medio Rodríguez nos relata su experiencia en el boxeo aficionado y su interés de dar un buen espectáculo en el campo profesional.
¿Qué nos puedes decir de tu experiencia en el boxeo aficionado?
"Fue una experiencia super buena, tuve 97 combates de los cuales gané 83 y me siento muy orgulloso de lo que hice en aficionado y me di a conocer muy bien. Peleé en muchos torneos como el Sixto Escobar, Isaac Barrientos, José Guillermo Malavé, Frankie Narváez, Copa Olímpica. Estuve compartiendo en todos esos torneos".
¿En qué momento decidiste dar el 'salto' al boxeo rentado?
"Yo decidí 'saltar' al boxeo profesional cuando tenía 18 años que ya podía ejercer mejor con mi físico y todo lo que mis entrenadores anteriores Malavé (José Guillermo Malavé) y Douglas (Ríos) me habían enseñado y pienso que es el momento ahora en mi carrera".
¿Consultaste con alguien la decisión que ibas a tomar?
"Fue una decisión que tomamos mi padre, Douglas y José Guillermo Malavé, que era mi entrenador anterior, todos estuvieron de acuerdo y aquí estamos ya en el boxeo rentado".
¿Te sientes preparado para hacer el cambio de amateur a profesional?
"Me siento preparado tanto físico como mental y estamos trabajando lo que es la técnica y el cambio de aficionado a profesional".
¿Ya tienes el nombre del rival que estarás enfrentando?
"Todavía no tengo el nombre porque que eso lo va trabajar la misma compañía de 'Cotto Promotions'".
¿Quién está a cargo de tu entrenamiento?
"Ahora mismo estoy entrenando con Douglas Ríos y nos está ayudando también Luis Rosario y Georgi Iglesias, son del área oeste".
¿En qué peso estarás combatiendo?
"En las 122.00 libras, me siento super bien, estoy siempre cerca del peso, no debo tener inconveniente en cuestión de peso".
¿Has tenido el respaldo de tu familia por la decisión que tomaste?
"Sí, tengo un respaldo inmenso de mi familia, de la fanaticada, de las personas de mi barrio 'Valle Seco' y de las mismas personas del gimnasio de la 'Escuela de Boxeo Horomico' de Hormigueros. Me están apoyando de manera extraordinaria y me siento muy a gusto con todo lo que me está sucediendo".
¿Qué puede esperar el fanático boricua, que es muy exigente, de 'Richy' Rodríguez?
"Dar un buen espectáculo y una guerra si hay que darla. Voy a dar el corazón por todos los fanáticos que me están apoyando".
Este medio tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con el entrenador Douglas Ríos quien nos dio su opinión sobre el joven pugilista.
¿Desde cuándo entrenas a 'Richy'?
"Ricardo Rodríguez lo entreno desde los 10 años. El comenzó con José Guillermo Malavé y cuando se retiró lo continué entrenando. Siempre he estado a su lado desde niño, ayudando y cooperando".
Despojándote de tu rol como entrenador, ¿cómo lo describes como boxeador?
"Es un excelente boxeador, es bien inteligente en el ring, sabe boxear y coge muy pocos golpes".
¿Es responsable en cuanto a sus entrenamientos?
"Es responsable, bien dedicado, un muchacho que no tiene vicios, ni bebe, ni fuma".
Entiendes que tiene 'madera' para tener éxito en el boxeo?
"Él tiene todos los requisitos para llegar y ser en un futuro un buen campeón".
