For musician Sebastian Ruth, providing music lessons to poor Providence, R.I. students started as a small project and has evolved into a full-time calling.

The Boston Globe reports Ruth's efforts were launched 15 years ago with the help of a small grant. Now, the musician sits at the head of Community MusicWorks, the Providence-based nonprofit he founded to expand music opportunities to more local students.

Community MusicWorks was among the organizations honored by Michelle Obama last week with the 2010 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award.
