'The River': Shocking Suprise On Emmet Cole's Lost Tapes

It was tapes on tapes on "The River" (Tue., 9 p.m. EST on Fox). The found footage thriller series also gave viewers more than ever seen before on Emmet Cole and his final quest into the jungle. When the crew tracked him to a waterfall, they found his pack filled with equipment and recordings, but no Emmet.

For the first time, no nefarious forces were out to get the rescue team, as the action switched entirely to the recordings uncovered. In them, Emmet's quest for the source of magic -- or whatever he was after -- saw him lose on man to skinning and another woman to simply running away. But he also revealed a deep passion and love still for his estranged wife Tess. When the woman admitted to a schoolboy crush, he rebuffed her advances saying that while they may be separated, they're not separated in his heart.

The recordings also showed the final phone call he had with his son Lincoln. It was a sat phone call where Lincoln could barely hear his father, but he basically brushed him off. By this point, Emmet was alone in his quest and going downhill fast. He went so far as to nearly break down and kill his dog for sustenance, but he refrained. And when he was unable to perform the whistle to call off the evil spirits that had killed and skinned his earlier associate, he thought it was the end for him.

It was at this point, Tess and Lincoln were astonished to hear someone else whistle off the spirit. Then the footage showed a mysterious group of natives gather up Emmet and deposit his prone body at the fence of an outpost, where he was seen by the people inside. Then, apparently, the natives took his pack to the falls anyway where his family could find it.

When the rescue team made it to the outpost, though, they found the fence collapsed and no one in evidence inside. If Emmet Cole was rescued there by teams of people mere months ago, what's happened since?
