While Tyler's war against Klaus reached its climax, Damon was battling his own heart on "The Vampire Diaries." His love for Elena was real, but he couldn't know if hers was because of the sire bond. She believed it to be real, and maybe it was, but he didn't want her with a supernatural devotion to him.
Still, it took him the full hour to finally use the bond to set her free. That gave Caroline enough time to spill the beans that Damon and Elena were together, and that they'd even slept together. So while Damon ultimately did the right -- and incredibly difficult -- thing, Stefan doesn't know that. And he's pretty mad about it.
Klaus, meanwhile, decimated Tyler's band of hybrids who'd broken their bonds to their mast. And because Tyler wasn't there to die along with the rest of them, Klaus took an even more dastardly revenge on him. He killed Tyler's mother.
The aftermath of both of these moments will be felt on "The Vampire Diaries," Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. New episodes return on January 17, 2013.
