Why Tia Mowry's Marriage Doesn't Include Traditional Gender Roles

"It's a team effort."

With multiple TV shows, a 4-year-old son to raise and a crusade to spread tips for preventing the flu this season, Tia Mowry is a busy lady. Her secret to doing it all is simple, she told HuffPost Live last week: she and her husband Cory Hardrict make their marriage an equal partnership -- one that avoids traditional gender roles altogether.

"We don't put gender roles on our marriage and our relationship. If I'm working a lot and Cory's home, he will put Cree to bed, and if dishes need to be washed, he will wash them," Mowry told host Nancy Redd. "So it's not like, 'Oh, I'm going to wait until my wife gets home and she's going to be doing all that.'"

Mowry said that having her husband to lean on allows her to chase her dreams while fulfilling her obligations to her family.

"I have goals and aspirations, and I believe that you can go after your dreams and it can work if you have someone there that's supporting you," she said.

Likewise, Mowry happily steps in for her husband when he is wrapped up shooting films like "American Sniper" or "Spectral," which hits theaters next year.

"I had to take on those responsibilities that a father would do," she said. "I was out in the backyard teaching my son how to kick a ball. We don't put labels on each other. ... It's a team effort, and at the end of the day it's winning and however we get there, that's what we do."
