Richard Carmona, Former U.S. Surgeon General, Explains Why America Needs A 'True Arbiter Of Science'

Former Surgeon General Explains Why America Needs One

Richard Carmona served as the U.S. Surgeon General from 2002 to 2006. While several others have held the seat since his term ended, the U.S. currently has only an acting surgeon general -- not an official one.

In a HuffPost Live interview Wednesday, Carmona explained to host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani how the country benefits from having a resident surgeon general.

"The surgeon general is the one who really ... carves out something that is of benefit to the public and [is] sensitive to the business community as well," he continued. "The surgeon general is really the true arbiter of science -- [assessing] what it is that our public needs, how do we get there, and let's engage the business community to try and help us get there."
