One of the best lessons I’ve learned in my life is to always remain a student. As a first-time mom, I will always be a beginner. Our life is ever changing and our family is constantly evolving.

My spectacular son is about to turn the big one! He is going from baby to toddler. Many will say, “That went fast.”

To that, I utter...“Not really.”

I’ve felt every single breath and without exception, all of the pain. The days were long and the nights have felt like an eternity. Each time I looked for the damn manual on child rearing, it just didn’t exist. If I asked 20 people I got 20 different answers. Motherhood has brought me to my knees. I know our journey together could not have happened any other way.

I have an infinite amount of firsts to experience with my son. In the last 365 days or 31,500,000 seconds, this beautiful little spirit has been my biggest teacher.

I am grateful for the abundant opportunities to practice being the conscious mommy I want to be. Here are just some of the nuggets of wisdom my son has shared with me.

Remain calm. Serenity and acceptance help the moments go a lot more smoothly.

I am completely equipped to rise to the occasion. No matter what the circumstances, I have never been given more than I can handle.

Ask for help. Seek some guidance. I’m not meant to do anything alone. Super-Mom is way overrated.

“I am grateful this sweet soul chose me to be his mom and student.”

Make joy a priority. I can always look at what is going wrong but why not let myself feel better by noticing what is going right.

Stay present. You deserve my full attention. I can practice multitasking at another time. There will always be something on my to do list.

If I’m tired, it’s okay to nap. No matter how hard I try, it won’t all get done before you wake up. Resting is important.

Immerse myself in the awe. Oh, when I take you in, I am just mesmerized by how spectacular the universe is.

My smiling makes others happy too.

Love grows bigger than I could possibly imagine.

Living life takes courage. I must take risks. Sometimes I fall, but that’s how I grow.

It’s perfectly OK to applaud myself for making the effort.

There’s always a new challenge to face. Nothing is happening to me. It is all happening through us both so that we never stop growing.

Count my blessings morning, noon, and night. Life is precious. Give thanks.

Being a mom is a gift that keeps on giving. I am grateful this sweet soul chose me to be his mom and student. When I am flustered with confusion, I can just look at my little boy and know that everything is going to be alright. Sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly but it’s all good in the end.
