Cheryl Luchetta Poisoned Son, Slit Her Own Throat, Prosecutors Say

Prosecutors: Woman Drugs Son, Slits Own Throat; Both Live

A woman has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly drugging her 7-year-old son before slitting her own throat--only to wake up and find her son alive.

Prosecutors said Monday that 41-year-old Cheryl Luchetta gave her son "a mix of Valium, Diazepam and Tylenol PM," before slitting her own throat and blacking out, NBC Chicago reports.

The suicide attempt, however, did not work-- and Luchetta woke Thursday to find her son unresponsive, according to a statement from DuPage County State's Attorney Robert B. Berlin. She called 911 and the boy was taken to the hospital, where he was ultimately treated and released.

“Any crime committed against a child tears at your heartstrings. What makes this case particularly disturbing is the allegation that this young boy was intentionally poisoned by his own mother,” Berlin said in a statement.

Luchetta remained hospitalized Monday, and faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
