Steve and Daryl Roth's beautiful Montauk beach house graces the pages of the recent issue of Architectural Digest. Words just can't express how stunningly chic and crisp this getaway is, but what else would you expect from an award-winning Broadway producer and real estate mogul power couple?
The home is filled with light and airy furnishings in a soft beachy color palette, but the showstopper in the living room is a custom-made light fixture by Jeff Zimmerman that is reminiscent of driftwood. It's set on 1.2 acres just 150 feet from the water's edge and boasts panoramic views of the sea. But, the property didn't look like this before the Roths bought it for $9.41 million in 2009. In fact, Architectural Digest said it was "a dilapidated 1980s residence" until Manhattan-based designer Thierry Despont swooped in and gave it a total transformation.
The most surprising news about the property? It once belonged to none other than Ponzi schemer, Bernie Madoff. According to CNN Money, the house was seized by federal authorities in 2009 and put on the market. Proceeds were apparently awarded to the victims of Madoff's crimes.
