David Letterman Asks Brian Williams About 'Today,' 'Tonight Show' Drama

WATCH: Brian Williams Gets Asked Uncomfortable Question

David Letterman tried to get Brian Williams to comment on the situation at "Today" and "The Tonight Show" on Tuesday night, but the NBC News anchor wouldn't say a word.

Williams was a guest on Tuesday's "Late Night," when Letterman broached the subject of "some trouble" at "Today."

"Am I going to wake up in the shower?" Williams joked in mock horror. "Please tell me I'm going to wake up and it's going to be morning and I'm going to say 'Hey! I’m doing Dave tonight and that was just a dream."

Letterman said that the brouhaha "has something to do with Ann Curry," and speculated that NBC was now stirring up trouble at "The Tonight Show" to take the heat off "Today" and Matt Lauer.

"Oh good Lord," Williams said.

"If I'm on to something, blink twice," Letterman said. Williams didn't blink.

"Today" is still enduring fallout with viewers from Ann Curry's ouster last year. Matt Lauer has been the subject of negative press reports, and his popularity rating has plunged since her departure. An 8000-word article in this week's New York magazine — which said that Lauer "simply didn't like" Curry — did not help matters for the show.

Meanwhile, NBC is reportedly planning to replace Jay Leno with Jimmy Fallon as host of "The Tonight Show." Leno has been taking shots at the network in his monologues, as NBC builds a studio for Fallon in New York City.
