Erie-based weapons accessory maker Magpul Industries put on sale this week a 30-round ammunition magazine bearing the inscribed logo "Free Colorado" and "Boulder Airlift" as part of an effort to raise money to fight gun-control efforts in the state and beyond.
The company announced on its Facebook page that it sold out of the limited-run magazine, a PMAG that fits an AR-15 assault-style rifle, in hours.
"Well...that was quick," read Magpul's message, posted on Monday. "We are currently sold out of both versions of the magazine. We will fit in another run as soon as we can do so without affecting other production."
The company is in the process of relocating to another state in the wake of legislation passed in March by state legislators and signed into law by Gov. John Hickenlooper that limits the sale of magazines in Colorado to those with 15 rounds or fewer.
Free Colorado and Boulder Airlift refer to public relations campaigns the company launched in an attempt to fight the legislation. The Boulder Airlift campaign included imagery based on the Berlin Airlift of the late 1940s.
Magpul said it is putting the proceeds from the sale of the magazines, which are priced at $64.75 each, into efforts to combat other gun-control measures that are under consideration in the country.
"Proceeds from the sales of these PMAGs will go towards the legal battle against recent unconstitutional firearms legislation in (Colorado) and other firearms rights efforts nationwide in which Magpul is involved," the company wrote on its website.
Magpul hasn't yet announced where it is relocating its operations, despite frequent and heartfelt requests from fans on its Facebook page urging the company to move to where they live.
The company also altered on the limited-run magazines its 10-year anniversary logo -- a skull-and-crossbones image bearing the years 1999-2009 -- to the dates 1999-2013 to "denote the time that Magpul existed in a free Colorado."
Magpul has not yet responded to requests for comment. ___
