California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) wasn’t about to let Vice President JD Vance stay in Fantasyland after his trip to Disneyland.
When the vice president was spotted in videos on X spending his Saturday at the Anaheim, California, attraction, Newsom reposted a clip of Vance and family strolling around the park and wrote, “Hope you enjoy your family time, @JDVance.”
“The families you’re tearing apart certainly won’t,” he continued, referring to deportation operations targeting immigrants throughout California and elsewhere in the country.
Vance refused to address the second half of Newsom’s comment in his reply, curtly replying, “Had a great time, thanks,” on Sunday.
Newsom’s press office also needled the vice president about his Disneyland adventure in several of its own X posts.
“Tired: trashing California for political purposes,” the press office account wrote on Saturday. “Wired: visiting & vacationing in California more than your home state this year.”
In another post, the office took a swipe at Vance and the Trump administration over the Florida immigrant detention site known as “Alligator Alcatraz.”
“JD Vance on Tom Sawyer Island looking for the next Alligator Alcatraz,” it said. “Too many happy families for him in one place.”
Newsom’s press office also reminded the vice president that “35% of Anaheim’s residents are immigrants. Disneyland doesn’t run without them. Enjoy their labor.”
Newsom, who is said to be eyeing a 2028 presidential run, wasn’t the only critic with something to say about Vance’s vacation.
On Friday, several protests took place near the park and outside Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, where the former senator and his family were rumored to be staying.
And Vance wasn’t able to escape criticism inside the theme park, either. Multiple videos posted to TikTok showed the Republican being booed by onlookers, though cheers and applause could also be heard mixed in.
Vance was also confronted by Democratic National Committee Vice Chair Jane Fleming Kleeb, who posted a social media video of herself repeatedly shouting, “Mr. Vice President we support immigrants, we support America” as Vance walked past a crowd of people.
“I thought California was violent,” she later added, alluding to comments Vance made during a visit to Los Angeles last month.
After protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown flared up across Southern California in June, Vance accused state Democratic leaders like Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of letting “violent rioters burn great American cities to the ground.”
Newsom responded by challenging the vice president to a debate, taking to X to ask, “Since you’re so eager to talk about me, how about saying it to my face?”
Vance’s qualms about California weren’t the only thing that made his Disneyland trip raise eyebrows.
In 2022, he accused Disney of profiting from “government handouts” and “declaring war on America’s children.”
