Homemade Plane Crashes, Kills Man, Injures Daughter

A 65-year-old Wiggins, Colorado, man was killed Monday when his homemade plane crashed at the Fort Morgan Airport. His 42-year-old daughter, a passenger in the aircraft, was seriously injured.

Richard "Rick" Tackabury built the plane earlier this year and had flown it at least two times previously, Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone told 9News. The crash, which occurred amidst low wind and clear blue skies, is being investigated.

Witnesses told the Fort Morgan Times the twin-engine fixed-wing Air Cam seemed to attempt a landing on a grass runway at the airport. After an apparent loss of control, however, the plane lifted back into the air and crashed between the grass runway and another concrete runway.

Laura Jean Tackabury, Richard's daughter, was treated by Morgan County paramedics on scene, then airlifted to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado. ABC News reports she has been upgraded to fair condition.
