Joe Manchin 'Frustrated' With NRA After Background Checks Vote

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) said Tuesday that he is "frustrated" with the National Rifle Association, charging the gun lobbying group with spreading misinformation about the background check legislation he co-authored with Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).

During an appearance on "CBS This Morning," Manchin said the NRA was "rattling the cage" and scaring gun owners into believing the background check amendment, which was voted down in the Senate last month, would infringe upon their rights.

"I'm frustrated with any organization that basically is saying things -- and what they're doing is they're rattling the cage if you will, saying, well, if they do this they're going to do this, it's a first step," he said. "People are concerned that [Congress] did this, now they're going to do this, this and this. That's not going to happen. This makes gun sense. Common sense, gun sense."

Over the weekend, the NRA held its annual meeting in Houston, Texas. During a Saturday speech, newly-elected NRA president Jim Porter vowed to continue to fight legislation like the Manchin-Toomey amendment, which he characterized as "all-out revenge on gun owners."

"Revenge is what's motivating the president's unrelenting attacks on gun owners today," Porter said.

"That's just not true," Manchin said Tuesday of Porter's remarks.

Manchin pointed specifically to concerns over family transfers, which the NRA highlighted in its criticism of the measure despite the legislation's specific exemptions for firearms transfers between friends and family. Manchin said that he planned to make "adjustments" to the legislation to clarify that point.

"We need to educate law-abiding gun owners, like myself, people that might belong to the NRA or other gun organizations... This bill not only protects your Second Amendment but expands the Second Amendment," he said.
