Joey Scott Charged in Fatal Beating of Juan Delvalle, School Bus Driver, After Minor Sideswipe (VIDEOS)

Man Charged In Fatal Bus Driver Beating Caught On Tape (VIDEO)

Prosecutors charged a Bronx man on Thursday with manslaughter in the beating death of an elderly school bus driver who accidentally sideswiped his double-parked car one morning earlier this month.

Juan Delvalle, 65, was driving a yellow school bus near Echo Park in the Tremont section of the Bronx when he clipped a mirror on a double-parked car owned by Joey Scott, 28, according to the indictment. The two men argued, then Scott punched Delvalle twice in the face, causing him to fall, hit his head on the pavement, and lose consciousness, prosecutors said.

Delvalle never woke up, and after 11 days in a coma, his family took him off life support.

Scott was arrested the day after the incident for assault and is being held on $250,000 bond.

The June 11 beating was captured on a grainy surveillance video, which shows Delvalle crumple to the street after Scott strikes him twice. Scott weighed about 60 pounds more than Delvalle and was 5 inches taller, the Bronx County district attorney said.

After the incident Delvalle was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, and died June 22. The medical examiner said the cause of death was "blunt force trauma of the head with skull fractures and brain injury."

Delvalle worked as a bus driver for 10 years and was retiring a few days before the alleged assault, according to NBC 4 New York.

Scott has a long criminal record including convictions for drug sales and robbery, according to prison records. If convicted of manslaughter, he faces 25 years in prison.
