Coming Soon: Kwame, The Movie

The rise and fall of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will soon be chronicled in a new "documovie" made by his sister, Ayanna Kilpatrick Ferguson.

A trailer for the "The Real Kwame Kilpatrick," released Monday, opens with a voiceover by Kilpatrick himself.

"I know you've heard so many stories about Kwame Kilpatrick. I've heard so many of those stories myself," he says. "Today I want you to sit back, relax, open your mind because I am the real Kwame Kilpatrick."

The trailer offers no release date, but promises exclusive commentary by the ex-mayor's wife, Carlita Kilpatrick.

Initially celebrated as Detroit's youthful "hip-hop mayor," Kilpatrick met with scandal and prison, and he continues to face corruption charges.

The former mayor stepped down from office in 2008 after pleading guilty to two obstruction of justice charges and no contest to a charge of assaulting or obstructing a public officer.

He served 99 days in jail for the offenses, but ended up with an additional 14 months behind bars for violating his probation and not disclosing assets that could have been used to repay money he owes the City of Detroit.

Currently, Kilpatrick is awaiting trial for 19 federal charges of fraud and tax evasion.

He lives in Texas with his family and is the author of the book "Surrendered: The Rise, Fall & Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick."
