Me encanta mi apellido, Soto. Es corto, sencillo de escribir y fácil de pronunciar. Tanto así que hasta el barista menos apto para las letras y las lenguas de Starbucks pronuncia mi apellido a la perfección cada vez que mi café está listo.
No puedo decir lo mismo de mi nombre, Irán, digo Hernán, perdón, quiero decir Iván, digo, Harim... Bueno, tú me entiendes.
He estado pensando mucho en el significado de los nombres desde que un buen amigo me contó que pensaba cambiar su apellido paterno por su apellido materno.
Resulta que, por cuestiones de las reglas machistas de nuestra sociedad, su apellido materno está en riesgo de desaparecer debido a que no hay otro varón en la familia que le dé continuidad. Él está por tener su primer hijo, y de cambiarse de apellido, su hijo podría ser la persona que reviva el apellido.
Hay algo muy noble en heredar un apellido, de pasarlo de generación a generación, como si fuera un objeto en una carrera de relevos. Podría ser fascinante imaginarse que un bisnieto algún día desempolve una caja adentro del baúl más viejo de la casa, guardado en la esquina más oscura del sótano y se encuentre con fotos y documentos de ancestros con el mismo apellido.
Quizá se encuentren con el nombre de uno, y le pregunten a alguien si alguna vez nos conoció, cómo éramos, qué pensábamos, qué hicimos de nuestra vida.
Hace tiempo, sin embargo, empecé a cuestionar el lazo entre los apellidos y los legados. En parte porque soy padre de tres hijas, y sé que el apellido Soto tarde o temprano desaparecerá de su linaje familiar. Ellas, cuando se casen, seguramente terminarán dándole continuidad a otros apellidos como Smith, Sadowsky o Sánchez.
Quizás fue un método de autodefensa existencial, pero dejó de importarme mi apellido. En parte porque mi abuelo materno, a quien nunca conocí, y del cual no llevo su apellido, fue una de las personas que mayor impacto tuvieron en mi vida.
Era una persona culta que alguna vez fue periodista y que tenía una gran apreciación por la música. Él le inculcó el amor a la música a mi mamá, y ella nos inculcó la música a mí y a mis hermanos a través de clases de piano, flauta, violín, violonchelo y trompeta.
Podría decir que cambió la trayectoria de nuestra familia, porque la música es parte indispensable de nuestras vidas. Mi hermano mayor, por ejemplo, es el concertino de la Orquesta de Baja California. Yo, por mi parte, me cuelgo la guitarra casi diario y me aviento unas dos o tres canciones a pulmón abierto, como si en verdad quisiera ganarme la propina. Mis hijas, por cierto, están en clases de música.
Una vez que me convertí en padre descubrí que más que el apellido, nuestro verdadero legado está en los valores que les pasamos a nuestros hijos y en los buenos hábitos que les ayudamos a cultivar.
Nuestro legado se pasa momento a momento; en la forma en que los tratamos, si les tenemos paciencia o si perdemos la cabeza, si les hablamos golpeado o suavemente, si los disciplinamos o los dejamos hacer lo que quieran, si les inculcamos un amor por las artes, un deseo de superación tanto académico como personal.
A final de cuentas, ellas van a encontrar parejas con esos mismos tipos de valores con quien buscarán formar una familia. De la misma forma que los tratamos nosotros ellos tratarán a nuestros nietos, y el círculo se repite con los nietos, los bisnietos, etcétera.
Quizás uno de esos bisnietos algún día desempolve una caja adentro del baúl más viejo de la casa, guardado en la esquina más oscura del sótano, y se encuentre con fotos y documentos de sus ancestros, de un tipo que se llamaba Irán, Hernán, Iván, Harim o Hiram o algo así. Quizás se entretenga unos minutos, pero para entonces nada de eso importará. Quizás cuando termine subirá las escaleras y se irá a su sala, donde sacará su instrumento y se pondrá a practicar, aunque sea por unos momentos.
