Miami-Dade Police say they were forced to shoot and kill a man in Soutwest Miami-Dade Tuesday night after he scrambled into a police cruiser and tried to run them over.

"This is a unique situation, we don't often see this," said Miami-Dade Police spokesman Det. Roy Rutland, according to NBC6. "Clearly this demonstrates how badly this man was trying to get away."

Officers were initially dispatched on a suspicious persons call to check out a white male spotted looking into a vehicle in the Hammocks just before midnight. But when they located the man at 77th Street and Southwest 162nd Avenue, he allegedly gave false information and refused to provide a "reasonable" explanation for his behavior and presence.

Rutland said that when the officers moved to handcuff the man, a "violent struggle" ensued. When the subject broke free, ran to the police car, and attempted to use it to strike the officers, one of them fired, killing him.

The incident remains under investigation, Rutland said, and police have yet to release the man's identity or those of the officers involved.
