The Basics
, in Cornwall, Connecticut, is in the northwestern part of the state, just over an hour from Hartford, Bradley International Airport and Poughkeepsie, New York; it's about 2 1/4 hours from New York City. Opened in 1947, the small but venerable resort is family-friendly and boasts a mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced runs. It does not offer any expert runs. Reviewers give it high marks for friendly staff, lessons for beginners and short wait times for lifts.
The Mountain
Mohawk Mountain rises to a peak of just more than 1,600 feet, with a vertical drop of 650 feet. The ski resort is near the

Mohawk Mountain opens in mid-December for 110 days, closing in late March or early April. The annual snowfall is 92 inches on average. Theme days cover everything from the '60s to Yetis to Mohawk Madness, a beach party at the resort. On College Nights students receive a discount. And if skiing doesn't offer enough exercise, enthusiasts can combine snow sports and yoga on special Snowga days.
Cost
vary, with midweek eight-hour flex tickets priced at $30 for adults and $15 for children younger than 5; weekend eight-hour flex tickets are $54 for adults and $15 for children younger than 5. A Friday or Saturday "Stargazer" ticket, good from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., costs $26 for adults and $15 for children younger than 5. Specials include a "Six Pack," which offers six tickets for the price of five. The "First Experience Day" on the opening day at Mohawk Mountain gives first-timers free equipment rental, a lift ticket and a lesson for skiing or snowboarding on the beginning slope (a package that would normally cost $70); participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for donation to the Torrington chapter of Fish Inc., a homeless shelter. Season pass holders are entitled to a 10 percent discount on full-price items. A premier tuneup of skis goes for $60 and a basic tuneup is $25.
