Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle and De Lama Lâmina

Matthew Barney's five-part film epic The Cremaster Cycle traces the creative process (in non-chronological order), with each film standing as a complete realized work in itself. The whole cycle is not available on DVD, and can only be seen in select screenings. Nuart will also be debuting Barney's De Lama Lâmina, a collaborative film created with avant-garde musician Arto Lindsay at Carnival 2004 in Salvador De Bahia, Brazil that traces the artist's ongoing interest in biomechanical erotica. In conjunction with LA Opera's Ring Festival, singers from L.A. Opera's Domingo-Thornton Young Artists Program will present excerpts from recently premiered and soon-to-premiere North American operas as part of Opera America's New Works Sampler. Free with museum admission.

SATURDAY, JUNE 12
Cause for Creativity: Fundred Dollar Bill Drawing Party
SMMoA (Bergamot Station)

In collaboration with artist Mel Chin's Fundred Dollar Bill Project, participants will hand-draw Fundreds that will be collected and presented to Congress as a unique testament of civic engagement through art. The Fundred Dollar Bill Project supports Operation Paydirt, Mel Chin's initiative to neutralize harmful levels of lead found in the soil of major U.S. cities, through contemporary art, engagement and action. Art for Clare
Bergamot Station (Santa Monica)

A benefit for the Clare Foundation, a nonprofit that provides alcohol and drug recovery services for individuals, families and the community. The event features a silent auction, a group art sale, a chance drawing with unique prizes, music and delicious food from local restaurants. Participating artists include Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston and Joe Goode, among others. Tickets $25, available online or at the door.
