Tom Corbett and the Marcellus Shale

Tom Corbett bows to the pressure of corporations and ignores the needs of the citizens of Pennsylvania. He has made clear that he will do nothing to protect the safety of Pennsylvanians and our environment.

As a life-long resident of the Commonwealth, I know that Pennsylvanians worry about the future of our state. They want to make the economy stronger so that we, and our children, will have job opportunities. They want to protect the environment so our grandchildren can enjoy our state forests and parks for many years to come. And they want leadership that is strong enough to take on the special interests that are working against the best interest of all Pennsylvanians. The Marcellus shale natural gas deposits present a unique opportunity for our state -- this resource has the ability to bring desperately needed jobs, but it has to be done in the right way. I have the plan to utilize the Marcellus shale for job and industry growth while still holding big oil and gas accountable for their actions and protecting the environment. However, Harrisburg insider Tom Corbett -- my opponent in this year's election -- has made clear that he thinks the industry should police itself. He won't give communities the resources they need, or protect the environment. And his biggest goal is to prevent the oil and gas companies that are making hundreds of millions of dollars a year drilling in Pennsylvania from paying their fair share. That's the difference between us. My campaign put together the following video illustrating the difference between me and my opponent on this issue, and I wanted to share it with you:

Tell Tom Corbett to stop putting the needs of special interests before the needs of Pennsylvanians.

Tom Corbett has called for "voluntary drilling standards" based on "consensus" with the industry -- which could mean that standards could be even weaker than they are today. That is dangerous for Pennsylvania, and would be a great misuse of this resource.

Tom Corbett has made clear that he will do nothing to protect the safety of Pennsylvanians and our environment. Do we really want a Governor who bows to the pressure of corporations and ignores the needs of the citizens of the Commonwealth?

Tell Tom Corbett to put the needs of Pennsylvanians before the interests of big oil and gas.

I have better ideas. I want to make sure the industry - not taxpayers - pay to keep our environment clean and deal with the impact on our local roads. I want the state to be able to enforce our safety and environmental standards.

Tom Corbett doesn't.

I'll make sure to, first and foremost, ensure the safety of Pennsylvanians. Tell Tom Corbett to do the same.

I am concerned about the people of Pennsylvania, their safety, and their jobs. The Marcellus shale presents a once in a lifetime opportunity. We only have one chance to get it right. I am the only candidate prepared and willing to do just that.
