(Crain's) -- The owners of Lincoln Park Hospital didn't follow proper procedures to close the hospital when it shuttered the facility last week, and it left while facing a string of health and safety citations, a state public health spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The hospital's owner, Merit Health Systems, failed to notify the Illinois Department of Public Health it was closing the facility at 550 Webster Ave., a spokeswoman for the department said. "They just ended up closing without ever alerting (the department)," she said.

The hospital closed last week after Louisville, Ky.-based Merit and its private-equity backer, Chicago-based Willis Stein & Partners, failed to find a buyer for the money-losing operation.
