A reported bomb threat forced an evacuation of the Eiffel Tower and the surrounding area this evening, including local park Champ de Mars, MSNBC reports.

The police press office says the threat came via a phone call and precautions were taken.

Some 25,000 were evacuated and officers are carrying out a search of the area with sniffer dogs, per BBC.

Today the French senate approved a law banning any veils that cover the face, making France the first European country to support such a measure, per CNN International, though it is unclear if that is related.

Police in Paris say no suspicious package or bomb was found after a thorough search.
