Family, Movie Cast Raise Funds For Cancer Stricken 'Stand And Deliver' Teacher

Jaime Escalante, the renowned math teacher whose efforts inspired the 1988 movie "Stand and Deliver" is fighting cancer and his family has run out of money for treatment.

Movie cast member Vanessa Marquez said the family needs $30,000 to continue treatment and has so far raised $5,000, the Daily Breeze reports. Escalante gained fame from teaching advanced math to underprepared students at Garfield High School in East L.A. The Bolivian-born teacher is 80 years old.

Cast members of "Stand and Deliver" are putting together a fundraiser.
