Georgetown Campus Gunman A False Alarm, Police Say

Police have confirmed that reports of an alleged gunman on the Georgetown Law campus Friday were false.

Georgetown University put the following alert on its homepage Friday afternoon:

"We are hearing reports from U.S. Capitol Police of a possible armed gunman on or near the Georgetown Law Center campus. This is not on the main campus. All Members of the Law Center community have been advised to shelter in place."

However, Capitol Police said that nothing suspicious has been found after a search.

At the time, public safety officer Anthony Simpson said D.C. police had told him, "a person, believed to be a man, had been spotted with a rifle."

In the process of their search, the police did find a gun near a tree close to campus, but they determined it was unconnected with the incident.

The Hoya, Georgetown University's student newspaper, tweeted that, according to a law student, "the law center is secure."

Georgetown's director of public safety issued an "all clear" to the campus via email.
