After 17 years of monopolizing Italian government, media and culture, Silvio Berlusconi resigned as prime minister of Italy Saturday, a moment most Italians never dreamed they'd witness. After 17 years, a "Hallelujah," or a chorus of them, was in order. A conductor and group of singers and classical musicians expressed the sentiment perfectly, singing the "Alleluia" chorus from Handel's Messiah outside the president's home, Quirinale Palace, in Rome. Amid heckles of "buffoon" and "Mafioso," "Alleluia" marked the magnitude of the moment -- that this was a symbolic end to an era of corruption and decline in Italian political life and culture -- and stirred hope for a comeback.
