A North Carolina lesbian couple is crying foul after their home was reportedly labeled with an anti-gay slur on Google Maps.
Canton residents Jennifer Mann and Jodi McDaniel told The Asheville Citizen-Times that Mann's son discovered the misspelled epithet while surfing the web at school. When he searched for their address, the Google Maps entry read, "Fagits live here," with the family's driveway marked as the inappropriately named street, according to the report.
A spokeswoman for Google told local news station ABC 13 that the slur has now been removed. The spokeswoman pointed to the mapmaker tool where people can edit maps, and although she didn't know who had added the slur, she added that the company would continue investigating the incident.
Still, the family says they consider the slur an anti-gay hate crime.
"This day and time, with people and hate, you just can't live your life," Mann, who shares the home with McDaniel and her three children, ages 23, 17 and 15, as well as one grandchild, is quoted as saying.
She also added, "We live ordinary lives, just like everybody else. Now it looks like I'm being a target."
Meanwhile, Kathy Hoglen, addressing coordinator for Haywood County, said she or someone in her office approves every street name, and believes the label did not originate at the county level.
"Of course we would never have approved anything like that," she told WMAZ 13.
