The right-wing Christian brothers whose planned reality show was controversially axed after their history of anti-gay remarks came to light have a message for Michael Sam, who made history this week after becoming the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL.
"Anybody that would be caught up in sexuality outside of the context of marriage between a man and a woman is in a dangerous spot," David Benham told Glenn Beck in an interview on The Blaze. Acknowledging that Sam is a "talented football player" who "should be playing in the NFL," he added, "His sexual expressions and the propagation of them are not healthy for him as a young man.” (Check out the interview above -- the remarks about Sam begin at 6:23)
Jason Benham then added, "The reason why I feel for Michael Sam is the same agenda that pushed us out of the limelight is elevating him to the limelight ... You can see what’s happening here and the minute that he decides to go against that, he’s going to be crushed."
The Benham brothers, of course, are not the only conservative voices to speak out in the wake of Sam's historic news. As Right Wing Watch first reported, Americans for Truth About Homosexuality President Peter LaBarbera blasted media outlets for airing footage of Sam's celebratory kiss with boyfriend Vito Cammisano, saying the reports didn't provide an outlet for people who "would voice disapproval of people being forced and subjected to, through the media, these homosexual acts -- the homosexual perversion.”
Meanwhile, Sandy Rios of the American Family Association said she was "revulsed" by the kiss before adding, “It’s just such an unnatural act, it’s hard to watch. I just don’t want to watch it, I can’t bear it.”
For his part, Sam seems to be shrugging off the opposition. "It's OK to be who you are," he told reporters when he was formally introduced by the St. Louis Rams earlier this week, according to the Associated Press. "It's OK to be comfortable in your own skin."
