Sandra Oh Rips Fired 'SNL' Cast Member Shane Gillis: 'Lazy Ass Unoriginal'

The "Killing Eve" star and former "SNL" host said she was "glad to see" the show's new hire dismissed for his racist and homophobic slurs.

Actress Sandra Oh , who hosted 鈥Saturday Night Live鈥 earlier this year, said Tuesday the NBC comedy show was right to fire new cast member Shane Gillis for racist and homophobic remarks on a podcast, and ripped the comedian for a nonapology.

The 鈥淜illing Eve鈥 star tweeted that she was 鈥済lad to see鈥 the NBC show had decided to 鈥淣OT legitimize/give platform [to] purveyors of racist homophobic content.鈥

She then referred to Gillis鈥 statement attributing his offensive comments to taking 鈥渞isks鈥 as a comedian, and saying he would apologize 鈥渢o anyone who鈥檚 actually offended.鈥

鈥淩isks? LAZY ASS UNORIGINAL,鈥 Oh tweeted.

An 鈥淪NL鈥 spokesperson said Monday, four days after Gillis was announced as a new cast member, that he would not be joining the show when its new season premieres later this month.

The decision followed freelance comedy writer Seth Simons鈥 tweets on Thursday featuring clips from a 2018 podcast co-hosted by Gillis. Gillis used racist slurs, including calling people of Chinese descent 鈥渇ucking chinks,鈥 and mocked Asian accents on the show.

Other reporters later pointed out more examples of problematic remarks by Gillis, who also referred to comedians who have spoken openly about mental health as 鈥渨hite faggot comics,鈥 and ranked comedians using their race, gender and sexual orientation.

Oh, in a subsequent tweet, questioned 鈥淪NL鈥檚鈥 vetting process, wondering how Gillis was hired in the first place.

She went on to congratulate other new cast members, Chloe Fineman and 鈥淪NL鈥 writer Bowen Yang. Yang played North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in a sketch with Oh when she hosted 鈥淪NL鈥 earlier this year, which inadvertently highlighted the show鈥檚 dearth of Asian performers.

Yang鈥檚 promotion makes him the show鈥檚 first Chinese American cast member, and one of only a handful of Asian and LGBTQ comedians to join 鈥淪NL,鈥 which has run for more than four decades.

Oh was only the third Asian woman ever to host the show when she appeared in March. 鈥淪NL鈥 has long been criticized for a lack of diversity and inclusion.
