An associate professor at the American University in Cairo was killed on Thursday in Baghdad when his diplomatic convoy hit a road-side bomb near an Iraqi university.

Stephen Everhart, who also acted as the associate dean of the American University in Cairo School of Business, was in Baghdad acting as a short term federal consultant to foster entrepreneurship education programs in Iraqi business and finance schools.

“He was just a wonderful person and dedicated to education,” Michelle Everhart McDowell, Everhart's sister, told the Washington Post. “He was just trying to do a good thing and it went bad. He doesn’t deserve this — it’s a horrible ending to a young life.”

In a statement, the American University in Cairo memorialized Everhart for his, "warmth and intelligence, his affection for his students and colleagues, and the contributions he had already begun to make to a better Egypt."
