President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day on Nov. 11, 1919 as a day "filled with lots of pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service" on the first anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.

Though it didn't become a legal holiday until 1938, Armistice Day -- which became known as Veterans Day in 1954 -- has become an annual time to pay tribute to all of the soldiers, sailors and other servicemen, both past and present, who have fought for their country.

Nations paid tribute to their troops with spectacular parades, religious services and other contemplative events. On the U.S. front, President Obama spoke to servicemen during his visit to Korea, while his wife Michelle served food at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
