A police officer investigating loud barking coming from a suspicious vehicle on the 2500 block of West Cermak found 43 puppies crowded into containers inside.

Iowa resident Travis Wester, 22, and Larry Subject, 49, were arrested Tuesday morning on animal cruelty charges, ABC Chicago reports. Both men face one misdemeanor count apiece for failing to meet animal owner duties, plus 43 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.

Police say the young animals were packed into overcrowded containers inside the car, without adequate food or water, NBC Chicago reports. All 43 puppies are now in the custody of the city's Department of Animal Care and Control, where they will receive medical treatment.

CPD is working with working with the animal care department on the ongoing investigation, according to the Chicago Tribune. Wester and Subject are scheduled to appear in Misdemeanor Court Wednesday.
