5 Rescued After Boat Sinks, Dozens Treated For Hypothermia

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Five people are safe after they were rescued by Colorado park rangers when their boat sank in Union Reservoir near Longmont.

Two adults and three children were treated for hypothermia on Sunday.

According to the Longmont Times-Call ( http://bit.ly/wCFCUO ), high winds hit the reservoir before the boat started sinking.

The Denver Post reports that Ian Champa and Roy Palmeri were the Union Reservoir Rangers that braved the frigid waters and pulled the two adults and three children to shore.

"They were very, very lucky," Laura McConnell, spokeswoman for Mountain View Fire Protection District told 7News about the rescued family in an email.

14 people total were treated for hypothermia at Union Reservoir on Sunday -- 7News reports that in addition to the rescued family, fire officials treated a nine other people for hypothermia. McConnell warned that even though the weather has been warming, it is still winter and the waters are still dangerously cold, "People need to be aware that although ice may not be on the lakes, streams and reservoirs, the water is still in frigid temperatures."
