9/11 Memorial Kicks Out Teens For Throwing Trash Into Reflecting Pool

Jerk Teens Booted From 9/11 Memorial

More evidence this week that kids can sometimes be disrespectful, little brats.

A group of middle school students from Brooklyn on a field trip were booted from the 9/11 Museum And Memorial for allegedly tossing trash into the reflecting pools. And, as if that wasn't enough, another student tried to bring bullets into the solemn site.

The New York Daily News reports students from Junior High School 292 in East New York were caught throwing baseballs and empty soda bottles into the water.

One student explained to the Daily News the kids just weren't adequately entertained. “No one was disrespecting. It wasn’t nothing like that,” said the student. “No one was being serious. Everyone was kind of bored and it was just something to do.” A teacher called it "an absolute disgrace."

A student also said he saw authorities confiscate three bullets from a classmate. Police confirmed they found three 33-caliber rounds in a plastic bin near the site.

The students were likely only 3 or 4 years old when the planes crashed into the towers nearly 11 years ago, making them part of that new generation of middle schoolers who don't remember the tragedy. (Check out a great article on teaching students about 9/11 here.)

The Department of Education is launching an investigation into the incident.

For discipline we'd like to suggest that the 9/11 memorial timelapse below, be played on repeat, for a whole school day, so students can appreciate just how much work went into its construction.

Also make them look at heartwrenching photos from the 10th anniversary of 9/11 at the memorial (see below).
