California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom took an opportunity to tackle the state's most important issues while Governor Jerry Brown was in China--namely honoring four overlooked California foods.

In an official proclamation, Newsom dubbed a state fruit, state nut, state vegetable and state grain.

"I know this is not education reform or water policy," Newsom joked on KGO. But he said that the move was meaningful given that California is "the breadbasket of the world."
