10 Celebrities Who Really Love Their Pit Bulls

10 Celebs Who Really Love Their Pit Bulls
|

This post is part of HuffPost's ongoing #PitBullWeek coverage.

Let's face it: Despite all the myths, pit bulls are just about the nicest dogs there are. You know it, we know it and even celebrities know it, including these 10 famous members of the elite who've welcomed these bullied breeds into their families with open arms.

And remember, just because you're not a movie star doesn't mean you can't help out a dog in need. Take a look at our roundup of adoptable dogs in the New York area here, or reach out to your local shelter if you're looking for a new best pal and are ready for the responsibility.

HuffPost Green is launching a week-long, community-driven effort to bust the myths and raise awareness about pit bulls, a maligned "breed" that often bears the brunt of dated, discriminatory legislation that can make it near impossible for these dogs to find a forever home. You can follow along with HuffPost Pit Bull Week here, or on Facebook and Twitter where we'll be using the hashtag #PitBullWeek.

75 NY-Area Pit Bulls Looking For Forever Homes
Loretta(01 of82)
Open Image Modal
Hi everyone! Loretta here. Thanks for checking out my profile. I’m living the good life with my Brooklyn foster mom right now, but she says it’s high time I spread the Loretta love to a forever family. Is that you? I’m a 3 year old, 60lbs bully mix that is spayed, up to date on shots and housetrained and living happily with my two besties: a small dog and a cat. You were probably drawn in by my sleek coat, my bodacious bod or my exotic eyes, but did you also know that I am awesome at Frisbee? I’ve also mastered my ladylike manners with Leave It, Come, Sit, Down and Wait. I’m an athlete, that’s for sure, as balls, Frisbees and sticks are some of my favorite things in the whole world, but once inside I am a calm, quiet snuggler. And my foster brother and my many friends in Prospect Park will confirm that I am a peach when it comes to other dogs. I can be shy with people, so a patient and understanding human in a quiet home would be my ideal match. A human who is willing to continue with my training and expanding my world will be greatly rewarded! If lately you’ve been thinking that your life is incomplete without a canine sidekick, you’re right! Shoot me an email and let’s meet.regan@reganwood.com

Calvin is AWESOME. He loves ALL people, young, old, male, female, loud, quiet, friends and strangers. He is happy to give everyone kisses and offer his belly for a rub. Calvin also loves to roll happily in the grass, loves splashing in muddy puddles and running in sprinklers. He loves to play. And every toy, ball or even an empty bottle is new, exciting fun for Calvin. He likes to snuggle and play with dogs his size too. Calvin is crate trained, housebroken and is very quiet when in his crate. He is happy to share his food, take treats so, so, so gently and is the perfect size for an apartment or house. Calvin pulls a bit at the beginning of each walk, he is so excited to be outside, but after a few blocks - he calms down and heels. Currently Calvin is living in a vet facility in manhattan and is experiencing real-life, out of the shelter joy. But each day when our fun times with Calvin end and he has to go back into his kennel at the vet, Calvin becomes very sad because he loves being with people so much. Calvin also has a magical extra toe on each of his back feet that are ABSURDLY cute and are sure to bring his adopters good luck!colby@sav-a-bull-ny.org website http://sav-a-bull-ny.org/sav-a-bull-adoption-application/

STAFF FAVORITE!!! Sasha was born with what we call 'the happy gene.' He's relentlessly upbeat, sweet, and innocent. He's a forever puppy in the most wonderful kind of way. Sasha is 3 years old, 55 pounds, extremely housebroken, and doesn't chew anything ever (except the stuff he's supposed to chew like dog bones). He's excellent with cats and awesome with dogs who come to visit.Sasha is in a foster home with three cats, one of which is a foster cat that has fallen absolutely madly in love with him and follows him everywhere he goes.Interested in adopting? Lil Blue (59 of82)
Open Image Modal
Lil Blue is an infectiously funny 1 1/2 year old girl who shows a little bit of a working drive: Need your tennis ball fetched? Check. Your sheep herded? Very possible. Short of that, a tennis ball will do. Lil Blue has a lovely confidence about her which makes her an easy match with a family (or anyone, for that matter), as long as that family does not include a cat. She's got a weak spot for confident male dogs, although she is equally good with female dogs as well! Lil Blue will make a wonderful addition to a home; she is funny, kind, and has a sense of self that is simply enchanting. Please email mbwambwa@yahoo.com

Portia(73 of82)
Open Image Modal
Its hard to believe that Portia has been at the shelter for almost two years with very little interest in her. She is a petite girl with gorgeous blonde and white fur. It looks as if she may have some boxer or lab in her heritage. She is a playful dog but also calm and well mannered. She greets people with an enthusiastic tail wag, sits for her treats and excels at companion behaviors such as lying down calmly by the side of her human friend. She loves playing with toys. Fetch makes her extremely happy. She is social with dogs but not a confident player. She dreams of the day when she will wake up in a home with people who love her, sunlight streaming through the window instead of the same kennel walls she has been looking at for too long. Portia truly is an overlooked dog. Please come down to the shelter to meet this gem. She is vaccinated, spayed, heartworm tested, microchipped and ready to go home with you.friends@projectpetinc.org
Hurricane(74 of82)

Poor Hurricane. He was found tied to a tree with a thick short chain and no food and water. He must have been so scared and confused. Once he was free and safe we saw what a happy and social dog he truly is! He greets people with an enthusiastic tail wag. He loves playing fetch and knows how to drop the ball on cue. He will also sit for treats :) What a good boy! Hurricane is six years young and in need of a loving home. One who won't abandon him but show him the care and respect a loyal and loving dog needs. He is fully vaccinated, heartworm tested negative and will be neutered and microchipped prior to adoption. Please come down to the shelter to meet this amazing boy.friends@projectpetinc.org
Polar(75 of82)
Open Image Modal
Polar, our wonderful special needs girl, is looking for her forever home! Polar came to us after her owner surrendered her due to financial hardship. Polar, as most owner surrenders in shelters, was terrified, confused, scared, alone, and nervous when she first came to us. Not only did she just leave the only home she ever knew, but she is deaf, and is even more lost than before. After Polar calmed down, and knew she was safe, boy oh boy did she blossom into a kick a** dog! Polar is extremely loving, submissive with people, FUN, enjoys playing in the yard, loves affection, and even knows hand signals! Polars face LIGHTS UP when you give her a 'thumbs up'! .. That means 'good dog!' She is friendly with other dogs, but being that she can't hear them approaching she would need to be paired with an appropriate play mate. Polar is one of our favorite dogs in the building and needs a home more than the others. Please consider opening your home and hearts to this amazing girl.friends@projectpetinc.org
Trey(76 of82)
Open Image Modal
The sweet, kind, low-energy, perfect-for-a-home-as-is love bug otherwise known as Trey is waiting, just waiting, for a forever family! Until recently, Trey had lived his life so happily with a family with children (he adores children), and all was going perfectly until the family fell on hard times and lost their home. They sure did right by this wonderful 1 year-old, though, who has the dearest nature and is so eager to please: He knows how to sit and give paw, he is house trained, and he is lovely around other dogs and all family members. His one itty, bitty, tiny flaw, if that's even how you choose to look at it, is that his extraordinarily loving manner and dear disposition does not extend towards felines. But we've all got our issues, and this amazing dog has so much more going for him than most other creatures we know! We would love to see Trey back in a home ASAP; it would be so healing for him, and such a wonderful gift to the family that welcomes him in, forever. Please, won't you give him and your family a happily ever after?friends@projectpetinc.org

You'll have no more cravings for candy if you have Camilla in your life, because she is 100%, pure sweetness. This 1 year old bundle of love has the most gorgeous temperament: She is happy, she is gentle, she is generous to everyone she meets, loving all people and considerate of all fellow canines. She is desperately and heart-achingly eager to please, always looking up to make sure she is doing as asked and that she is pleasing company. She is never, ever anything but pleasing company. Camilla knows sit and stay; she comes when called and walks perfectly on a leash. Camilla is looking for someone to walk with every day, to call her name, and to tell her what a magical creature she is. It will be the easiest task of your life, and the most filled with adoration for you both!Contact: friends@projectpetinc.org
