David Fincher's 'Gone Girl'? 'Dragon Tattoo' Director Could Make Gillian Flynn Adaptation

From Lisbeth Salander to Amy and Nick? As first reported by Variety, David Fincher may follow-up his work on the adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" with an adaptation of "Gone Girl," Gillian Flynn's pulpy, best-selling novel-cum-required airplane read. Deadline.com -- which, like Variety, is owned by the Penske Media Corporation -- also reported the news.

As Variety notes, no offer has actually been made to Fincher just yet.

"Gone Girl" is Flynn's third novel and her biggest success. The book tells the story Amy Dunne, a Missouri woman who may or may not have been murdered by her husband, Nick, on the couple's five-year anniversary. The twisty thriller has drawn comparisons to "Fatal Attraction" and "War of the Roses."

The news of Fincher's possible involvement puts the future of his "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" adaptation in some doubt. That project, set up at Disney, has been on Fincher's plate since 2010 -- he spoke about it during press for "The Social Network" -- and as recently as October of 2012, Brad Pitt was approached to star. Per Variety, that never panned out. (Fincher could still make the film.)

In addition to "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," Fincher was also among the rumored candidates to direct "Star Wars: Episode VII." In November of last year, Deadline.com reported that Fincher "would be game" for the sequel.
