Dexter has been officially renewed for a sixth season, Showtime announced Monday.

The announcement was a virtual formality (reports of the renewal circulated last week). In its announcement, Showtime President David Nevins lauded the serial killer drama as "the best suspense drama on television," and called its renewal "the easiest decision I've made since I got to Showtime."

It has not yet been announced when the show will return to the air.
