When 39-year-old Evelyn Lozada learned she was pregnant with her third child, she was thrilled. But once the "Livin' Lozada" star was six weeks along, she received potentially devastating news. Based on the low level of her hormones, it was likely that she would end up miscarrying.
Lozada, who is engaged to baseball player Carl Crawford, still held onto hope that the pregnancy would go to term. Unfortunately, her worst fears were soon confirmed by her doctor: Miscarriage was inevitable. Lozada learned the heartbreaking truth on the same day she was scheduled to attend a photo shoot with her 21-year-old daughter, Shaniece; instead, Lozada stayed home to cope with the news.
"I feel like when something tragic like this happens, whether it's this [miscarriage] or anything, I've learned that there's always something better to come," she says tearfully in the above video. "I guess that's what I hold onto. It just wasn't meant to be."
When Shaniece visits her mother to check up on her, Lozada talks about what she's feeling.
"I woke up this morning -- early, early this morning; it was literally still dark outside -- and I started feeling cramping," Lozada says. "I knew... the process was starting."
Lozada also opens up about her immediate reaction upon learning that she was going to miscarry, and why she felt she had to skip the scheduled photo shoot.
"After leaving the doctor's office, I literally just needed to turn off. I wanted to come [home] and just be able to grasp everything that was going on," she says. "I just needed quiet."
Though this meant breaking a professional commitment, Lozada knew it was more important to focus on her well-being. As it turns out, spending the afternoon with her 1-year-old son and the evening with her fiancé is exactly what Lozada needed to help process the loss.
"I feel better," she tells Shaniece. "I'm like, 'OK, it's happening.' I've accepted it. I feel like I can deal."
Later, Lozada also breaks the news to her close friend, and learns how comforting it can be to discuss her feelings with someone who knows exactly how she feels.
