These First Tweets Will Make You Nostalgic For A More Innocent Age

Remember when there was such mystery to social media?

Ten years ago this Monday, the very first tweet was launched into cyberspace.

Since March 21, 2006, Twitter's popularity has skyrocketed. The service has become a vehicle for activist movements like #OccupyWallStreet, #BlackLivesMatter and #BringBackOurGirls. It's been a forum for political feuds, celebrity spats and displays of integrity. It's grown into a platform for debate, a site of scandal and a breeding ground for ideas, plus an enabler of whatever this is.

In celebration of Twitter's tenth anniversary, we used the "discover" tool to dig up the first tweets of some of the site's most notable users. We should note that users can delete their tweets, so there's no guarantee that these tweets are absolute firsts.

But they're fun, so enjoy!

Some got off to a tentative start...
Others had bolder openings...
The politicians played it straight...
Some had jokes...
And the rest, well, they tried their best.

Here's to 10 more years.
