SAN FRANCISCO -- In a city known for its love of noirish tales and international visitors, the case of Hugues de la Plaza represents an unfortunate collision of the two.

On June 2, 2007, Mr. de la Plaza, a successful sound engineer with dual American and French citizenship, walked out of a bar at closing time in the popular Hayes Valley neighborhood and headed to his nearby apartment. About six hours later, he was found dead in the apartment, having bled to death from multiple stab wounds. He was 36.
