These cops made sure that a single mother and her son could have the Christmas they deserved.
Karie Steele of Indianapolis, Indiana, and her 5-year-old son, Miles, came home Monday afternoon to a suspicious sight.
"Miles was walking in front of me and he just walked right in and I was, like, 'Was the door open?'" Steele told WTHR.
The pair discovered that burglars had used a drill to break into their apartment and had stolen several items, including Christmas gifts intended for Miles. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), who responded to her report, took it upon themselves to make things right, and returned to the pair's home the next day with gifts for Steele and her son. It was a gesture that the single mom said spoke volumes.
"I struggle enough as a single mom and for the cops to take their own money and time, it meant a lot," she told the WTHR.
Though the burglars have yet to be apprehended, Steele said that thanks to these kindhearted officers, her holiday season will be one to enjoy.
"Christmas is going to be good. It's going to be good," she told WTHR
It's encouraging to see law enforcement, such as the IMPD officers, going above and beyond the call of duty for citizens. Earlier this month, Officer William Stacy of Tarrant, Alabama, for example, answered a call from a grocery store reporting that Helen Johnson, 47, had been caught stealing eggs. The grandmother, who was desperate to feed her grandchildren, expected the officer to arrest her. Instead, the compassionate officer bought her the carton of eggs.
In another show of generosity, Trooper Jeff Jones pulled over Helen Smith, of Panaca, Nevada, for driving too closely to his vehicle, the Associated Press reported. However, after his warning, the 87-year-old, who was on her way to see her ailing son, accidentally backed up into the officer's car. Worried that Smith wouldn't be safe making the trek by herself, Jones, along with three other officers, drove Johnson across Utah so she could visit her son.
