Indian media have quoted a commando chief saying the siege at Mumbai's Taj Mahal hotel is over, after an assault to dislodge the last few militants.

BBC correspondents at the scene say the news has not yet been confirmed but police seem much calmer.

Commandos began a new assault early on Saturday as fighting that had killed at least 144 people entered a third day.
