A Night Out In Culver City, Burbank, and Santa Monica
Culver City: Father's Office 2.0(01 of06)

Sip from a rotating selection of 36 craft beers at one of the communal tables fronting Father’s Office 2.0, a choice spot from which to observe the line of hopeful diners milling outside the gastropub in the Helms Bakery building. Chef-owner Sang Yoon’s burger—topped with caramelized onion, bacon, Gruyère, and blue cheese—is a reminder of why taste buds (and cows) were invented.Father's Office3229 Helms Ave.Los Angeles, CA 90034 (credit:Flickr: Hella TJ)
Culver City: Kirk Douglas Theatre(02 of06)

From there it’s just a two-minute walk to the Kirk Douglas Theatre. The Center Theatre Group venue, located in a streamline moderne movie house, launches its fall season this month with Venice, a critically well-received hip-hop reimagining of Othello. Consult the schedule for DouglasPlus programming, which offers experimental workshops and readings for $25.Kirk Douglas Theatre 9820 W. Washington Blvd.Culver City, CA 90232 (credit:Flickr: Pena2)

Burbank: Los Angeles Equestrian Center (04 of06)

It can be tough finding an evening activity that appeals to adults and kids, which is why the no-experience-required sunset horseback rides led by the Los Angeles Equestrian Center are an excellent compromise. Starting at 5:30 every night (an hour earlier in winter), the center offers group trail rides through Griffith Park followed by dinner (and beer for Mom and Dad) at Viva Fresh, a local Mexican restaurant. You’ll be back at the stables no later than 9:30. Los Angeles Equestrian Center 480 W. Riverside Dr.Glendale, CA 91201 (credit:Los Angeles Equestrian Center)
Burbank: Bob’s Big Boy(05 of06)

If it’s Friday, continue on to the Burbank location of Bob’s Big Boy for a milk shake and a slightly more modern mode of transport: vintage automobiles. At the classic car show, which is held in the parking lot of what is the restaurant chain’s oldest branch (behold that original sign), auto buffs gawk at tricked-out rides or show off their own (Jay Leno likes to stop by). Burbank: Tony’s Darts Away (06 of06)

There are board games at Tony’s Darts Away, but you’ll want to drop the kids off with a sitter before heading to the six-month-old hang where beer takes center stage. Sit at the long wooden bar to sample one of the dozens of varieties on tap, all California brewed. If you get hungry again—or even if you don’t—peruse the menu of sausages, nearly half of them vegan, that come with toppings like sweet onion jam and mango-melon salsa.Tony’s Darts Away 1710 W.
